Eden Garden Orphanage News: November 1999

Dear Friends,

We have moved to Montrouis, a city on the beach in Haiti. Although we were situated quite well in our mountain site (compared to the rat-infested place where we first found our orphans!), we still had overwhelming problems there such as lack of clean water and electricity. We thank God that we have relocated to the beach site in the little village of Montrouis. We have come a long way since our first visit to Eden Mission.

Our dear friend Bettie, a missionary from Florida, is a great blessing to us. She successfully maintained a school for over 2000 Haitian children and knows the area well. She directed us to the nice site where we are now located. We are renting a house on the water, which provides a dream come true for the children. It has bigger bedrooms and 3 baths, all secured with big stone walls. The children and staff are able to swim every day. They have more access to transportation and better access to potable water. Another blessing is Bettie's large school, which has solved our education problem for now.

Friends, I knew from the beginning that we needed our own land to build our own place. Leasing property is far too costly in the long run and severely limits the possibility of us accomplishing what we believe needs to be done. We recently met the owner of some nice land which would be a prime location for us to build our orphanage. It is 5 acres in a good location with fruit trees on the land. After talking to him, we were happily surprised that he was so impressed with our mission that he is willing to give us a free 25 year lease on the land. We would be able to build as we please, at our cost of course. We are working on a legal contract that will suit both parties.

The lease we are presently in expires in February 2000. We need to build the new orphanage as soon as possible. To begin, we need to erect a stone wall around the property for security. Next, we will need water and electricity on site. Then we will need to build an adequate facility with bathrooms, separate quarters for boys and girls, an area for staff and volunteers, and a kitchen. We pray that with your help we will make significant progress before February.

The children are doing fine; they look much healthier now and are happy. Their menu has improved and they are able to obtain some fruits and vegetables now from a market in Montrouis within bicycling distance. In the future we plan to provide a garden on our land and an opportunity to catch fish. Without your help it will be impossible for us to move forward in our mission of providing for the unfortunate little ones. We would love to hear from you!

In His Service,

Charles LeMorzellec
